Week Ahead Spread
A newly created Weekly Spread for your enjoyment.
This particular spread was inspired by the English Nursey rhyme "Monday's Child" (A.E. Bray, Traditions of Devonshire, 1838).
One common iteration of Monday's Child
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace.
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go.
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living.
And the child born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, good and gay.*
*In modern versions, Sunday's Child is often referred to as "fair and wise" rather than "bonny and blithe".
"Monday's Child" is an example of a fortune-telling song, with this particular rhyme designed to predict the personality, temperament, and fate of a child based on their day of birth.
Although many fortune-telling songs were later popularized as nursery rhymes aimed to entertain and educate children, the practice of using rhyming songs as a form of divination has its roots deep in history, with documented reports of rhymes like Monday's Child circulating around Suffolk in the 1570s.
